Embracing the Dark
This time of year can be challenging for many reasons.
The days are shorter, the evenings darker and the weather is turning colder and wetter as we head into winter.
Our ancestors would have embraced this change of season as a time to hunker down and rest. Our bodies aren't supposed to run at high speed all year round!
But with Christmas looming, for many this brings more busyness and stress that goes against the natural cycles.
I have to say, although I love witnessing the change of seasons, I do slightly wish away getting to the winter solstice, knowing from then on the light returns! (only three and half weeks away! ;-) )
However, last night I was reminded of embracing this time for quiet and stillness.
This is a great opportunity to pause, reflect and go inward.
Of course, that can feel uncomfortable to stop and bring in more quiet time. In the quiet, we can hear more loudly what we've been avoiding.
Maybe, you feel an outside pressure to be doing?
But what if you could embrace the darkness?
Whether that's allowing yourself to FEEL what you've been avoiding, or whether that's switching off, dialling down the noise and taking time to rest in stillness and listen.
Ask yourself, “what do I want to do this winter?”
Maybe you'd like to commit to more inner work. Maybe you'd like to rest more, read, study, meditate, stretch, play…
What would you do?
Allow yourself to see these dark, cosy evenings as an opportunity to do the things you've been putting off, or too 'busy' to do.
I know, I'm going to make a conscious effort to switch off the technology and get reading all the books that are piling up! ;-)
